Standard & Poor’s reports that this drop represents the steepest rate of decline since Standard & Poor’s began keeping an index of housing prices in 1987.

Mortgage applications in the U.S. rose last week by the most since January of 2007. Less expensive borrowing costs apparently encouraging more buyers to seek loans for home purchases and refinancing.
