House Prices Drop

According to news released today by the Associated Press, housing prices across the nation, including Lindon and the Utah area, dropped 3.2 percent in the second quarter of 2007. Standard & Poor’s reports that this drop represents the steepest rate of decline since Standard & Poor’s began keeping an index of housing prices in 1987.

Mortgage applications in the U.S. rose last week by the most since January of 2007. Less expensive borrowing costs apparently encouraging more buyers to seek loans for home purchases and refinancing. The Mortgage Bankers Association’s index of applications to buy a home or refinance a loan jumped 8.1 percent to 656.5 from 607.1 the prior week. This is good news for buyers and sellers in the Highland real estate area because it indicates growing activity in the Highland real estate marketplace.

Furthermore, a gauge of demand for credit specifically for home purchases rose 7.4 percent, and the average rate on a 30-year fixed mortgage fell for the fourth consecutive week.
